In the early 20th century, Grass Lake was filled with wild rice and blooming lotus beds. Some boats had to use a poles rather than oars, due to the shallow water and density of the lotuses. Between the 50's and 70's, much of the lotus disappeared due to human traffic but there has been a revival in recent years of these beautiful flowering white lotus.
A business emerged in the middle of the lake that catered to the tourists who came to see the lotus. Over the last century it has changed names from Shorty’s to the Lotus Lodge Hotel, then Hotel Blarney and finally, Blarney Island as it remains and is operated today.
